Almost nobody can really be happy with the bailout bill, but I have to admire the political skill involved.  In its trip from the failure in the House on Monday to the approval today, they managed to change it so it picked up both Barbara Lee and David Drier.

(later:) Perhaps this is too opaque.  Lee  and Drier are about the farthest left and farthest right of the California congressional delegation.  So anything that gets them cooperating is truly amazing.

I compare it to Joe Gibbs' famous 'counter trey' play when he coached the Redskins. When done right, it convinced the right linebacker that the play was going left, and the left linebacker that the play was going right.  Result, they collided, and the running back could get an extra 4 yards.

Does that help?  I didn't think so.

What, if anything, was actually changed in the bill? Nothing I've seen so far addresses this question.

I gotta admit most I know about the changes comes from listening to the debates on C-SPAN. I know the bill went from 200 pages to 600! Big things I heard of was they slipped this year's AMT delay into this bill, and ran up bank deposit insurance from $100K to $250K.

There is also a ~20K subsidy for children's wooden arrows.

If you put enough pork in, everyone will buy it. Cyclists got tax benefits for commuters, for instance. Barbara Lee's comments indicated she's counting on an Obama win to make it good.

But take a listen to this weekend's This American Life, the bit at the end is very interesting. There's hope there.

And I really believe something had to be done, and quickly.

One more edit: Stark still voted against it- he's the local who was a banker.

I think it went from bad to worse. But hopefully a Democrat president with a Democrat majority will result in a Democrat spinal column in January.
